David Davis returns from Iraq

Congressman David Davis has just returned from a trip to Iraq:

Tennessee U.S Rep. David Davis returned from Iraq this week saying that U.S. troops are making significant progress there and feeling more confident than ever that now is not the time to start bringing them home.

“The men and women in uniform see that they are making a difference,” said Davis, R-Johnson City.

...

Davis said he was particularly impressed by the sight of Iraqi children coming up to American soldiers at a busy market and shaking their hands.

“These were little kids that were coming up and thanking the American soldiers,” Davis said. “They felt that comfortable, to actually go speak to the soldiers. And to see the young Iraqi boys and girls going up and interacting with the soldiers tells me the soldiers must be there every day so they feel like they are part of the community.”

...

The group also met with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and other military leaders who assured them that the situation on the ground is improving, Davis said.

“It’s not as bad as you see in the national news,” he said.

This is why I am in favor of staying in Iraq:

“One of the generals said, ‘Congressman, there is a 5-year-old lying in a bed tonight somewhere in America that will be over here fighting this war in the future if we don’t finish it now,’ ” Davis said.

“He said we have to win this battle now so that Americans don’t have to be here for generations to come.”

I did not say that I was in favor of staying the course. I think we should get more aggressive. We need to face the facts, Al Qaeda is not going to stop.
